Mark 2010 as the year the winter followed the SCCSC. In the sixth and final competition held April 10th and 11th at June Mountain and Mammoth Mountain, it became apparent that the typical spring race was much more winter-like than anticipated.
The final race weekend was filled with activity as the SCCSC asked its alumni to return for an alumni race and hosted a après ski raffle to benefit the Boarding 4 Breast Cancer charity.
The weather was as anticipated to start the day Saturday: warm and sunny. The mid morning Slopestyle competition was filled with tricks, twists, costumes, and sunscreen. Traditionally the spring conditions have given way to unique speed suits on the last race, ranging from goldi mays Elvis to a San Diego Chicken knock-off. Competitors from UCSB were sure to receive the best dressed award for the day, if such trophy were to be given. While UCSB was spirited, their neighbors to the south edged them out in the competition, UCLA topped the women’s snowboard competition, and CSU Fullerton won the men’s discipline. Its no surprise that UCSB’s women’s ski team was joined by USC’s men’s team for the top spots in the Skier Slopestyle competition. Complete individual results are posted at www.sccsc.com..
The afternoon Halfpipe competition was preceded by a weather change for which the eastern sierra is famous. The sunny Slopestyle weather gave way to windy and cool temperatures just 300 yards away at the Halfpipe. The energy UCSB extracted from their attire worked for their men’s snowboard team in the pipe, as they finished first alongside SDSU’s women’s riders. Again USCSA champion women’s skiers from UCSB and men from USC showed their dominance. See www.sccsc.com for complete results.
Saturday afternoon, the SCCSC, its alumni, and the community of June Lakes took the opportunity to help in the search for a cure to breast cancer. The Tiger Bar, the central restaurant, bar, hang out, and town landmark, hosted the capacity crowd after the days competitions. Sponsors and friends of the SCCSC, including FuelTV, 686, DC Shoes, SPY, Electric, Vans, SkullCandy, Vonzipper, Mountain High, and others, chipped with prize products in to help make the charity raffle a success. In all, the event raised over $1,300 in support of B4BC’s cause.
The final BoarderCross and SkierCross races of the 2010 season were held Sunday back at Mammoth Mountain. These races were make-up races for weather cancellations earlier in the season, and weather threatened these as well. Through the wind and cold winter temperatures, the races went off without a hitch. Results from the final Cross events are posted www.sccsc.com as well.
