2010 SCCSC Season Opening Competitions
The SCCSC hosted its first races of the 2009-2010 race season at Mammoth Mountain between the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and the events were successful! A winter storm made it necessary to cancel Ski Slalom, Boardercross, and Skiercross events on Wednesday, 12/30 but the Slopestyle and Giant Slalom events that took place on 12/31 and 1/2/10 were great fun for racers and organizers alike.
A slopestyle competition took place no New Year’s Eve with over 60 SCCSC athletes participating in the event on the cold, windy Mammoth Mountain day. The event was organized by SCCSC staff with cooperation from the Mammoth Mountain Race and Park Departments while judges and course crew were volunteers from the SCCSC. In two runs of competition, the athletes were judged based on three criteria: style, amplitude, and overall impression.
Results for the slopestyle include Women’s Snowboarders Samantha Deleo of CSULB, Mallory Nordblad of UCLA, and Monica Thatcher of SDSU in the top three spots. Michael Muraki of UCSB, Morgan Medove from SDSU, and Jon Gee of Cal State Long Beach finished 1, 2, 3 for the Men’s Snowboard discipline. The top skier finishers included Yulia Dubinina of UCSB, Julie Fair from UCLA, and Katherine O’Brian from USC for the women and representing the men were Robert Thorpe and Abe Kislevitz, both from USC, in the top two spots joined by Mike Basile from UCSD in third. Full results are available at www.sccsc.com.
The SCCSC hosted a giant slalom for skiers and snowboarders on January 2nd on the race pitch Fascination at Mammoth Mountain. These two run timed events were enjoyed by more than 80 SCCSC student athletes. Women’s skier transfer student Haley Ells, currently at UCSB, formerly from SDSU, claimed the top spot in the GS, followed by Samantha Bates from LMU and UCSB teammate Lili Daniels in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Men’s skiing results posted USC’s Abe Kislevitz and Ben Gunton in 1st and 3rd, with UCLA’s Matt Isbell between them.
Snowboard Giant Slalom results for the first competition boast LMU’s Kaylee Taylor, SDSU’s Vanessa Rockstroh, and UCLA’s Mallory Nordblad as the top athletes. The ladies were accompanied by men’s top finishers Kevin Barnes from SLO on a carve board, Morgan Medove from SDSU, and USC’s Tom Gibblings. Full results are available at www.sccsc.com.
The next set of competitions will be over MLK weekend, taking place at both Mammoth Mountain and June Mountain on the three day holiday weekend event. Hope to see you there!
